El legendario músico brasileño dará una única presentación este 27 de noviembre en Teatro Nescafé de las Artes.

Su aspecto físico es quizás la clave para definir como un músico extraordinario al albino Hermeto Pascoal, quien con su particular estilo, forma parte de la riqueza sonora de Latinoamérica.

Admirado por músicos de la talla de Astor Piazzolla o Miles Davis, el "albino loco" ha revolucionado con su capacidad de tocar con excelencia los instrumentos más variados, hasta hacer música con cualquier elemento disponible, entre ellos, frascos o tubos, también ha incluido en su trabajo sonidos de variada fauna.

La música de Hermeto Pascoal abarca estilos como bossa nova, forró nordestino, free jazz, música clásica, hasta el tango, pero hay en esa amplitud un trasfondo extramusical: en su exploración de nuevos sonidos se esconde la búsqueda de la unidad elemental.

Es muy probable que ni conozcas a Cabezas de Cera, pero aquí estamos para ampliar un poco tus oídos. No es la primera vez que este grupo mexicano viene a nuestro país. Ahora, con un nuevo integrante, nos traen su propuesta musical, que es bastante experimental y extraña de primeras, pero que tiene una gran riqueza en su sonido. Tienen varias fechas en la Quinta Región y en la Región Metropolitana, y lo mejor de todo es que todas son absolutamente gratis. Los detalles de las fechas después del salto.

Últimamente ando re obsesionadísimo con la voz de Antony Hagerty (Antony & the Johnsons). Que mejor, el tema "Nighttime and Morning" donde colabora con Sierra Cassidy una de las hermanitas de CocoRosie (¿Coco o Rosie? Nosé). El disco, por lo que he leído, lo clasifican dentro del "Freak Folk" aunque, a mi gusto, es mas bien por quienes colaboran -Sierra Cassidy con Matteah Baim- que por el resultado (bueno, uno que otro tema medio folkie, pero no mas de eso).
Misterioso, etéreo, bastante oscurillo, requisitos indispensables para mi.

"...si John Cage hubiera tocado guitarra, sonaría como Fred Frith." una acertada frase alguna vez dicha sobre esta verdadera leyenda, que a sus 60 años, y con una impresionante discografía de casi 500 discos junto a la más variada gama de artistas de todo el mundo, participando ya sea como guitarrista, bajista, violinista, compositor, productor o multinstrumentista, describe al inglés Fred Frith como el referente vivo más importante en el mundo de la guitarra avant-garde en el mundo.

Frith es el iniciador junto a Henry Cow, del corto pero influyente movimiento RIO (Rock In Opposition) que surgió en 1978 en Inglaterra paralelo al Punk (tras el festival del mismo nombre), y que nace como rechazo al accionar de la industria discográfica de la época, la que mostraba poco interés y apoyo a músicos más arriesgados y "no clasificables", mientras se enriquecía groseramente con la pretenciosa industria del Rock de mediados de los 70´s. Años más tarde, Frith toma contacto y participa activamente durante 15 años de la escena "Downtown" de NY, junto a Massacre, Skeleton Crew, Keep the Dog, y como bajista de Naked City junto al saxofonista John Zorn. Frith, es también protagonista del aclamado film "Step across the border", donde se retrata en parte, su caleidoscópica actividad como músico e improvisador a principio de los noventa.

Aunque hasta el día de hoy se autodefine como un "músico de Rock", su abultado currículum incluye un extenso listado de participaciones en las situaciones musicales más diversas (The Residents, Ensemble Modern, Brian Eno, Derek Bailey, Laurie Anderson, Arditti String Quartet, Mike Patton, Bill Laswell, Art Bears, Rova Saxophone Quartet y Robert Wyatt entre otros), además de componer soundtracks para películas, música para teatro, danza, y su actual actividad como profesor de composición de la facultad de música del Mills College en Oakland, California, que desarrolla en paralelo a su agenda conciertos y grabaciones por todo el mundo.

Frith, quien junto a Keith Rowe (del colectivo inglés AMM) fué pionero en intervenir o "preparar" la guitarra eléctrica, descubriendo nuevos timbres en un instrumento ya en decadencia por la sobrepoblación de "héroes" y sus clichés, se presentará de ésta forma por segunda vez en Chile (el ´97 tocó junto al baterista Chris Cutler en el salón Fresno del centro de extensión de la UC), presentando ésta vez, un concierto en solitario preparado para esta histórica sesión en el Teatro Oriente de Santiago.

Jessamine ha sido uno de esos últimos grandes descubrimientos, adquirido a través de otra página melómana (la cual suelo visitar con frecuencia: http://wharfinger.extra.hu/) estos chicos de Ohio, mudados después a Seattle, me recuerdan a una mezcla entre Stereolab y Sonic Youth (conste que tienen sonido propio y cuando digo Sonic Youth me refiero a la época del "Confusion is sex").

Los dos discos posteados acá fueron subidos por Wharfinger y, al igual que ellos, recomiendo de sobremanera el "The Long Arm of Coincidence". El tercero es subido por mi. Saludos y dis-ten-fru.

Leyendo, la otra vez, un mail donde seleccionaban 10 discos de WARP (sí, ese sello con artistas bien raritos) de Super 45 recordé un disco que hace mucho tiempo no escuchaba, este. Honestamente no tengo mucho tiempo para hacer algún tipo de reseña asi que dejaré la que hicieron ellos.

"En la época, Red Snapper era una rareza. Ello pues en un mundo donde la electrónica era música hecha por tipos con máquinas, ellos la tocaban con instrumentos más convencionales: batería, bajo, guitarra, teclados y saxofón. En un mundo de programadores donde la queja del público era la frialdad de las presentaciones, Red Snapper se transformó en la sensación en vivo del momento. Su jazz cool y narcótico, junto a ritmos del incipiente jungle, da un resultado de mala leche.

Temas como “Crusoe takes a trip” navegan por mares remotos y apasionantes, llenos de aventuras y peligros. El contrabajo pulsa con fuerza, mientras la batería se ejecuta sin concesiones, el saxo se pierde en su propia libido y la guitarra va narrando como una voz interpretativa que describe lo que está ocurriendo. Red Snapper posee una efectividad venenosa y letal, y Prince Blimey es un álbum que sobrepasa por mucho los epítetos de trip hop. "

As you may know, Hanin Elias has a vast musical experience, the ex member of the former band Atari Tennage Riot has edited four albums, she founded the music label Fatal Records and she’s also the pioneer of a German hardcore digital band. This time, she's in Santiago, Chile for the recording of her fifth album, which will count with notorious musicians from all over the world. Elias is planning to present tracks from this album at the main hall of the prestigious Alameda Art Center for the first time, a few of these tracks include the participation of some integrants of the Chilean band Industrial Company Inc (ICI). Hanin very kindly takes a break during the recording session to talk a little bit with Spin Earth.

SPIN Earth: Why did you decide to come to Chile?
Hanin: I actually decided to quit music and move to a little island in the south pacific (Eastern Island), then Diego Sagredo contacted me last year to do a show in Chile. I thought if I should do it or not for a really long time but I missed so much to make music, so I decided to come over and as we became really close friends we decided to do more than just a couple of shows together. Last year we decided to do an album together and this year I’m back in Chile not only to do a show but also to record a new album with Diego and ICI (Industrial Company INC Sagredo's band).
We’re recording the album with several musicians for all over the world; we have Marcel Zuercher from Die krupps and David Yonan from the Chicago symphony Orchestra playing the violin. Little by little we’re going to get others musicians involved via internet, it’s going to be a very nice album, we already have eight tracks full of vocals and we hope we’re going to play some of the tracks live ion October the17th at the Centro Cultural Alameda. The Chileans will have the privilege to hear first the new songs in this early stage we are working on.
SPIN Earth: Do you know about the music scene here in Latin America? Has something cough your attention?
Hanin: I have seen some clubs but some of them are more like electronic clubs and goth clubs and everything seems to be like in the '80s, so I don't know so many South American bands but I know there is some youth industrial music scene and I think the "Chilean anger" is really authentic, the Chilean industrial bands are really honest about what they say and is something that I really like and respect.
SPIN Earth: You founded Fatal records, why did you quit the project?
Hanin: We released many albums and bands on Fatal Recordings in a very short time. But those were really hard times for us and other record companies as well. When I started my label, distribution companies were going bankrupt all the time, it was a very real difficult moment, I invested a lot and everything seemed to be going down the hill. We were running against the wall with what we were doing, even with all the potential and the lots of motivation of the great musicians we had, it wasn't possible financially speaking because of piracy, CD burning, etc.
SPIN Earth: Distribution wise, were do you think music is moving towards?
Hanin: What I really hope to happen is that every musician will be able to be very independent and sell its music on the Internet and do publicity for himself or herself. The people will know how to get the information, download the song and the money will go directly to the artist and not to people who get some sort of percentage and stuff. I think this will be possible very soon; I'm trying to go there myself because I'm sick of being in a label getting bondage contracts or getting ripped of by people who just want to make a profit from my art. I think musicians should be independent, and I think the Internet will make that possible.
SPIN Earth: Do you keep a relationship with your ex-partners from Atari Teenage Riot?
Hanin: We contacted each other on facebook that was the first time we talked to each other on eight years I think. But it’s still a shy contact, we had a lot of strange experiences together and now we’re talking about maybe doing some sort of reunion or something, but I think we are so different from each other and our ways of thinking are so far away from each other that it might be difficult. Alec Empires wants to do it but then he said to speak with his agent and then all this blah, blah, blah... that kind of stuff doesn’t interest me at all. I want to speak to the person and have something in between the band, I don’t want to speak to some agent because I don’t have an agent, I don’t have a manager, I don’t have a lawyer. I don't want to go through business, for me it has to be about something like friendship, you know? The idealism of getting the band back together, if it goes in the direction of agents and managers I don’t think I will be interested.
SPIN Earth: Which are you favorite bands and website?
Hanin: Kings of Leon I like very much, Cat power, I like Anthony and The Johnsons, Peaches is great, I like Isia... and my favorite website I think is Facebook "Diva life" (laughts)... and Farmville.
SPIN Earth: Do you have any advice for any new bands?
Hanin: I feel myself like a new band because I have to start right from the beginning and have to look for labels, I'm actually looking for people who can give me advice (laughts) but I really can’t tell them that if do they music. All I have to say is be passionate about making music, someone will recognize you if you are. If you get in to the all self-distribution I think is something that everyone can do, and it will get you more and more little by little. That's how we do it right now...

HOLDEN VUELVE A CHILE A PRESENTAR SU NUEVO DISCO: FANTOMATISME

La agrupación francesa realizará una gira por siete regiones de nuestro país durante las primeras semanas de Octubre para presentar su cuarta producción “Fantomatisme”. La gira abre en Centro Arte Alameda el 01 de Octubre, donde por primera vez se podrá escuchar el nuevo album en vivo. Destaca además la presentación de la banda en el recién inaugurado Teatro Nescafé de las Artes el 10 de Octubre.

Holden está formada por Dominique Dépret ( Mocke ), Armelle Pioline y Cristobal Carvajal. La banda ha visitado en reiteradas ocasiones nuestro país, grabando sus últimos tres discos en Santiago de Chile junto al productor alemán Atom Heart . Su música es poética, nostálgica, y delicada e intensa a la vez. Se caracteriza por un sonido pop muy elegante, con claros matices rock y con muchos seguidores a lo largo de nuestro páis.

Esta primavera Holden vuelve nuevamente a nuestro país para dar a conocer “Fantomatisme”.y además con actuaciones en vivo en diferentes regiones. Su gira incluye presentaciones en Santiago, Concepción, Valdivia, Puerto Montt, Osorno, Puerto Varas, Temuco, Talca y Valparaíso. Las entradas estarán disponibles próximamente a través de Ticketmaster.

Acerca de su nuevo disco, Fantomatisme David Mckenna, crítico de la revista inglesa Rockfort , opina sobre “Fantomatisme”: “El cuarto trabajo de Holden abre con una advertencia: “Il faut faire attention…”. Hay varias maneras de traducir esto. Puede significar "Ten cuidado" o "Pon atención". Con un álbum de Holden, se debe ser cuidadoso en tener juicios apresurados - y puntualmente se debe escuchar con mucha atención. Te puedes pegar a el como música de fondo, cumpliendo esa función de manera admirable, ya que Holden, superficialmente, son una banda de easy listening. Sin embargo, "Fantomatisme" empieza a usar un espacio amplio en la mente después de unas cuantas vueltas, lo intrínseco de sus arreglos soñadores y lógicos a la vez, y sus matices melódicos, gradualmente encantan”.
